Our unique Family & Community Medicine residency program focuses on patient- and family-centered care and is affiliated with the College of Medicine at the University of Arizona, Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona and Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. Our program continues to receive a status of “Continued Accreditation” from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Onvida Health is a 406-bed community hospital located in Yuma County, which serves over 200,000 people and covers an expansive area. Our diverse population includes those who are medically underserved as well as a substantial migration of winter visitors, providing a wide range of healthcare challenges and disease states from which our residents gain in-depth, hands-on experience. Our geographic location near Mexico’s border and 4 different American Indian Tribes within Yuma County offers additional unparalleled experiences. Our residents also have opportunities to fully integrate themselves into our community by participating in several community outreach events, local health fairs, healthcare career camps and through activities such as providing sports physicals to local student athletes.

Meet the Faculty, Residents and Alumni
Our Family & Community Medicine Residency program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and is the only residency program currently offered at Onvida Health.
About the Family & Community Medicine Residency
The program is led by a full-time, community-based faculty that has received national recognition. Throughout your residency at Onvida Health, you will find a caring, supportive teaching atmosphere and a collegial spirit that will enable you to form long-lasting relationships.
Throughout the three-year program, four hours are dedicated each week to core Family Medicine lectures, conferences and workshops. Residents also receive six months of elective time to give them the flexibility to gain concentrated experience in a specific area of interest such as sports medicine, women’s health, medical research, skin and wound care, pain management, border health, allergies and immunology, palliative medicine, medical informatics or sleep medicine. Orientation takes place in July for first-year residents. All residents receive four weeks of paid vacation, and those completing their Post Graduate Years (PGY) 2 and 3 receive five paid Continuing Medical Education (CME) days each year.
To be eligible for the Family & Community Medicine Residency program at Onvida Health, all applicants must meet the requirements described in the Resident Appointment Eligibility and Selection Policy.
All applications are processed and evaluated through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) beginning in September of each year. In addition, Onvida Health participates in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP), and strictly abides by NRMP policies.
Interviews are conducted during the months of October, November, December and January of each year. The Family & Community Medicine Residency program at Onvida Health accepts ten PGY1 positions annually.
PLEASE NOTE: APPLICANTS GRADUATING BEFORE 2020 ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THE PROGRAM AND WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR THE PGY-1 CLASS ENTERING JULY 1, 2025.
Your Family & Community Medicine Residency will prepare you to meet today’s medical challenges as well as those of tomorrow. Our three-year curriculum includes four elective months and a strong focus on practice management and medical ethics. This unique program focuses on conscientious, evidence-based healthcare and emphasizes the critical role of the family physician in the continuum of care for families.
At Onvida Health, you’ll find a supportive and collaborative atmosphere that will help you become a well-prepared graduate. As a resident, you will have the opportunity to practice in a variety of environments, including the physician’s office, our hospital and our local community. You will gain real-world clinical experience and receive high-quality, personalized instruction to help you develop the skills you will need to build a successful career in family medicine.
Technology will also play an important role in your residency at Onvida Health. You will gain valuable, hands-on experience with our EPIC electronic health record system and have access to the New Innovations resident education suite of applications designed to help you track your medical training, scheduling, duty time, case logs, conferences and other aspects of your residency.

Onvida Health is committed to helping our Residents balance the increasing demands of the modern healthcare environment. This is why we focus on providing resources that promote Residents’ wellness and satisfaction.
The areas of focus within Onvida Health’s Resident wellness program are:
- Emotional Health – There are times when stressors can get in the way of balancing the demands of professional and personal life. Without help, support and resources, problems can intensify, having an effect on emotional and physical well-being and professional success. Our program offers Residents guidance, assessment and referral to several mental health resources, including individual and couples counseling, substance abuse assessments and counseling, and medication monitoring and assessment. Specialists are also available to meet with Residents to discuss topics such as depression, burnout, suicide, anxiety, time management and disruptive behavior.
- Physical Health – Onvida Health’s internal wellness program, Fit for Life, is available to help Residents focus on key areas of physical health, including nutrition, exercise and tobacco use. Services provided include: One-on-one wellness coaching, self-directed challenges, educational presentations and demonstrations, biometric screenings, newsletters and fitness classes. Residents must have time to attend medical appointments, mental health appointments, dental care appointments, and any other personal care needs. In order to facilitate this, each program will make residents aware of at least 4 different time slots, within the same academic year, when this can be achieved.
- Spiritual Health – Your spiritual care is very important to us. Spirituality demonstrates that people are not merely physical bodies that require mechanical care. Research demonstrates that people finding their spirituality helps them cope with illness, trauma, loss and life transitions by integrating body, mind and spirit. Onvida Health employs a team of full-time chaplains who can help Residents with crisis intervention, critical incident stress management, facilitation of staff communication, conflict resolution and much more.
- Financial Health – As a Onvida Health employee, you are eligible for various financial programs to help you remain financially healthy. The Employee Assistance Program (EAP), SupportLinc, provides financial assistance including telephonic consultation with financial professionals to assist with debt reduction, home buying, budgeting and bankruptcy prevention. SupportLinc also provides access to certified financial planners for such planning and long-term goal setting. In addition, Onvida Health offers several other employee benefits, including a qualified retirement plan.
