Press Release

Onvida Health has added a new Leica surgical microscope to its growing spine surgery program, giving surgeons a clearer, more detailed view during complex, minimally invasive procedures.

The new technology advances the capabilities available to Onvida Health’s surgical teams and is part of a broader commitment to investing in the future of healthcare in Yuma and southwestern Arizona. Over the past year, Onvida Health has invested more than $170 million to advance healthcare services throughout the region, bringing together new technology, facilities and clinical talent to support the evolving needs of the community.

The Leica surgical microscope provides greater magnification and illumination, allowing surgeons to clearly see fine details during a procedure. In spine surgery, where surgeons work around delicate nerves and surrounding tissue, that level of visibility can be especially important.

The technology also allows all members of the surgical team to see the same magnified view as the surgeon on a display in the operating room. This gives surgical technologists, assistants, and other members of the care team greater visibility into each stage of the procedure and helps the team stay coordinated throughout the surgery.

“Our patients are at the center of every decision we make, including how we invest in new technology,” said Brittany Chavez, Administrative Director of Perioperative Services at Onvida Health. “This microscope gives our entire surgical team the ability to share the same detailed view throughout a procedure, building on the collaboration that is already such an important part of how we care for our patients. It’s exciting to continue bringing new technology to Yuma that supports our surgical teams and the care we provide for our patients.”

The microscope is the latest addition to Onvida Health’s growing surgery program, which also uses advanced navigation and imaging technology to support procedures. The program has expanded with the addition of Dr. Olusegun Onibonoje, who specializes in complex, minimally invasive spine surgery.

“For me, the most meaningful part of bringing this microscope to Onvida Health is what it represents for our patients,” said Dr. Olusegun Onibonoje, Orthopedic and Spine Surgeon. “They’re trusting us with their care during an incredibly important moment in their lives, and we take that responsibility seriously. Having access to technology like this allows us to continue pairing the expertise of our surgical team with advanced tools, all while caring for patients here in the community they call home.”

The surgical microscope builds on years of investment in advanced surgical technology at Onvida Health. That commitment includes the health system’s growing robotic surgery program, which began with an investment in robotic-assisted surgery in 2019 and has since grown to include seven robots and 15 trained providers. Together, these investments reflect Onvida Health’s focus on bringing advanced tools and specialized expertise to the teams caring for patients across the region.
