Onvida Health announces the retirement of Dr. James F. Moon, a highly respected cardiothoracic surgeon whose career has profoundly transformed the landscape of healthcare in Yuma. His retirement marks the end of an inspiring chapter in Yuma’s medical history while paving the way for continued innovation and a healthier tomorrow.

Dr. Moon joined YRMC nearly 20 years ago to spearhead the creation of Yuma’s first open-heart surgery program – a project many believed would never work. Against the odds, he led the initiative to build and upgrade hospital facilities, train staff, and develop a comprehensive heart surgery program that opened its doors in 2004. His work has brought life-saving care to Yuma, sparing patients the need to travel far from home during their most vulnerable moments.

“When I first came to Yuma, I couldn’t have imagined the profound impact this community would have on me. It has been my greatest honor for our team to have cared for about 5,000 brave and trusting patients who inspired me to do my best every day,” said Dr. Moon. “The letters and cards I’ve received, sometimes decades after surgery, remind me of the ripple effect this work has had. This community has given me a sense of purpose, and I am retiring full of gratitude thanks to you all.”

Beyond his technical skills, Dr. Moon’s compassion and mentorship have left a lasting legacy. His leadership paved the way for numerous advancements, including the creation of Yuma’s Cath Lab, the introduction of the TAVR procedure, and the development of a hybrid operating room. He has also served as a mentor to countless physicians, providers and staff, leaving a permanent mark on Onvida Health’s culture of excellence.
“Dr. Moon has saved lives, transformed healthcare in our region, and left a lasting impact on everyone who has had the privilege of working alongside him,” said Dr. Robert Trenschel, President and CEO of Onvida Health. “His vision, determination, and unwavering commitment to his patients have elevated the standard of care in our community. While we will miss him greatly, we celebrate the legacy he leaves behind and the beginning of a well-deserved retirement for a man who has dedicated his life to saving others.”

At 70 years old, Dr. Moon looks forward to spending more time with his wife and exploring the world, fulfilling long-held dreams and bucket list adventures.

As Onvida Health says goodbye to Dr. Moon, we extend our deepest gratitude for his unparalleled contributions and we celebrate a career that has forever shaped the lives of patients and the community.
